There's a saying in basketball circles that goes, "We can't throw the ball in the ocean today." That had to
be what the Mavericks were thinking in the McNeil Classic finals matchup against undefeated Killeen
Ellison Saturday afternoon in a 72-45 loss. Ellison came out the gate on fire, converting on their first five
shots, all three's, while the Mavericks, who defeated Anderson, Bastrop and Killeen Shoemaker en route to
the finals, saw practically every shot bounce off the rim time and time again and eventually trailed Ellison
20-6 after the first quarter.
The second quarter proved no better for the Mavericks. It wasn't until the 2:09 mark in the quarter that
the Mavericks scored their next basket, making it 35-9 Ellison, and trailed Ellison 35-12 at half.
The Mavericks came out in the second half and battled Ellison point for point, scoring 33 second half
points, four less than Ellison, and had chances to cut into the deficit, but had their troubles at the free throw
line as well, converting on only 10 of 21 freebies.
Javian Johnson was the only Maverick in double figures with 11 points.
(note) Anthony Davenport saw limited time in this year's classic due to back spasms.
The Mavericks now travel to take on undefeated Manor this Tuesday night at the Manor gym.
