Defense wins championships. If that's true, the Mavericks certainly sent a message to it's 16-5A
counterparts that they shouldn't be counted out just yet in their pursuit of the 16-5A playoffs, following
their 55-35 win over Westwood Tuesday night.
Leading 26-23 at the half, the Mavericks kicked that defense into high gear at the beginning of the third
quarter and kept the Warriors from scoring a single basket in the quarter! In the meantime, the Mavericks
pushed its lead to 40-23 heading into the fourth quarter, en route to the easy win.
The Mavericks, with a district record of 8-4, now sit alone in second place, two games behind Leander, and
one game ahead of both 7-5 Round Rock and Georgetown.
The Mavericks take on Round Rock this Friday at the Dragon gym and will need another defensive effort in
the contest to maintain its second place status.
Anthony Davenport paced the Mavericks in scoring against Westwood totalling 13 points. LC Alexander
added 11, an Clay Tobolka, returning from a nagging ankle injury all season, had his best scoring output of
the season, chipping in 10.
