When asked, “What is the best advice you ever received?”, Mavericks co-captain Anthony Davenport
replied, “Always have confidence in yourself and play hard”. That confidence and hard play was certainly
on display Friday night as Davenport lead his Mavericks to a 56-46 victory over rival Round-Rock in a 16-
5A matchup at the Dragons gym.
After fellow co-captain Javian Johnson got the Mavericks going in the first quarter, scoring all eight of the
Mavericks points in the quarter while matching the eight scored by Round Rock, the night belong to
Davenport. Three successive jumpers by Davenport pushed the Mavericks lead to 14-8 at the 6:20 mark in
the second quarter. Round Rock then rallied to close the Maverick lead to 18-15 with 2:25 left, but
Davenport’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Mavericks a 21-18 lead at half time.
Johnson’s basket at the start of the third quarter, gave the Mavericks a 23-18 lead. From there Davenport
stole the show. He scored the Mavericks next seven points and help push the Mavericks lead to 32-23 lead
with 5:06 left in the quarter. Following a steal, he completed a three-point play to give the Mavericks a 35-
23 at the 4:03 mark. Yet another 3-pointer by Davenport made it 38-23 Mavericks, en route to a 42-31
lead after three quarters.
The final period saw Round Rock make a run at the Mavericks, slicing the Mavericks lead to 51-46 with
1:01 left to play, but that was the closest the Dragons could get in the contest.
Davenport finished the night with 28 points; Johnson chipped in with 10.
In the final regular season game of the year, the Mavericks take on Stony Point at the Mav gym Tuesday
night.
