No senior athlete, no matter the sport, wants to never, ever, lose their last home game. For Maverick
senior starters Javian Johnson, LC Alexander, Anthony Davenport, Brandon Jones and Clay Tobolka,
their refuse to lose attitude propelled the Mavericks to a 64-61 thrilling win over Stony Point Tuesday
night at the Mavericks gym.
Having already secured a second-place finish in district 16-5A, the Mavericks seemed content on just
playing out the contest early on. Stony Point on the other hand needed a win to position themselves nicely
in a battle for the final playoff spot in district.
Trailing Stony Point 37-27 at halftime, the Mavericks came out in the third quarter displaying a little more
zest in its play, and outscored the Tigers in the quarter 19-16 behind the play of Davenport and Tobolka,
but still trailed Stony Point heading into the fourth quarter, 53-46.
LC Alexander got the Mavericks rolling in the fourth quarter with a quick layup, slicing the Tiger lead to
53-48. A subsequent steal by Blair Williams, who found Alexander streaking to the basket for another
layup, made it 53-52 Stony Point at the 5:00 minute mark.
The Tigers though held tough, and still led the Mavericks 59-55 with 2:01 left in the contest. Successive
free throws by Williams made it 59-57 with 1:37 now left to play.
The Mavericks then employed a full-court press that rattled the Tigers. Davenport was able to grab a
deflected pass falling out of bounds, and got the ball to Brandon Jones. The Mavericks quickly reset the
offense and Davenport found Johnson under the basket to score, tying it at 59 with 1:23 left.
Stony Point regained the lead 61-60, at 1:11, but Johnson then powered his way to the basket giving the
Mavericks its first lead since the opening quarter, 62-61 with 43 seconds left.
Following a Stony Point timeout, the Tigers setup for what they hoped would be the game winner, but
Johnson stole the inbounds pass with 20 seconds left, and spotted Jones who jetted to the basket and
scored giving the Mavericks a 64-61 lead with 12 seconds left.
Stony Point pushed the ball up court quickly and attempted a game tying three-point shot, but Williams
partially blocked the shot to preserve the Mavericks victory.
The Mavericks now prepare for its opening playoff game against Cypress Springs of District 15-5A at the
Mavericks gym this Tuesday night.
