In a match-up of two of the top teams in District 14-5A, Leander bested the Mavericks in the finals of the
Hays Tournament 50-41 Saturday afternoon.  The Mavericks ran out to a 10-4 first quarter lead, only to
see Leander storm back and shut the Mavericks down in the second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks
16-5, en route to a 20-15 half time lead.

The third quarter saw the Mavericks score the first six points of the quarter for a 21-20 lead at the 6:14
mark, and pushed the lead to 24-21.  Following a Leander timeout, the Lions retook the lead 29-26 heading
into the fourth quarter and never trailed again.

The Mavericks made one last run at Leander in the fourth quarter.  Trailing 41-29 with 3:50 left, the
Mavericks full court pressure rattled the Lions, and was able to slice into the lead, trailing Leander by only
five points with 1:50 left.

Applying that pressure came with a price however.  Three of the Maverick starters  fouled out during that
run,  and watched Leander step up to the foul line and convert on their free throws time and time again.  In
fact, Leander connected on 13 of 17 free throws in the quarter alone, while the Mavericks shot a dismal 6 of
15 from the line during the quarter.

The Mavericks return home this Tuesday night to take on Connally High School.
