Are the best things in life, really free? If you ask the Mavericks the answer would have to be a resounding
yes, after shooting a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line in its 55-50 win over Cedar Park Friday night.
Leading 40-29 heading into the fourth quarter, the Mavericks seemed to have the game in hand, but
quickly found themselves in need of every free throw down the stretch to get the win and stay atop the
district 16-5A standings with a 3-1 mark.
Opening the quarter with a three, (one of four three's shot by Cedar Park in the quarter) and subsequent
two-point basket, Cedar Park quickly closed the gap to 40-34 with 7:05 left to play. Following a Maverick
timeout, both teams matched baskets making it 42-36 Mavericks at the 5:20 mark.
With the Mavericks leading 44-41 with 3:43 left to play, things got interesting. Javian Johnson was fouled,
and completed the and-one from the foul line for a 47-41 lead. Cedar Park though came right back down
the floor at the 3:01 mark and connected on its second three of the quarter making it 47-44 Mavericks.
Executing its passing game, the Mavericks ran the game clock down to the 1:56 mark, before increasing its
lead to 49-44 at the 1:10 mark. A Maverick basket made it 51-44, but Cedar Park came right back again
connecting on another three slicing the Mavericks lead to 51-47 with 45 seconds left. Anthony Davenport,
who slashed and dashed his way to a team high 19 points, calmly stepped to the foul line and connected on
both ends of a one-and-one, pushing the Mavericks lead to 53-47 with 23 seconds left. Once again, Cedar
Park came right back at the Mavericks, scoring its last three pointer of the quarter, making it 53-50 with 19
seconds remaining. Forced to foul, Cedar Park sent the Mavericks Kenny Lewis to the line with 10 seconds
left, only to watch Lewis drop both his free throws, securing the 55-50 win.
The Mavericks return home this Friday night to take on Westwood High School.
